The outcome of 61st state Senate district race, between Democrat Jacqui Berger and Republican Ed Rath is awaiting the results of?the counting of some 84,000 mail-in and early ballots in Erie County. Counting only got underway Nov. 17.

Neither candidate has so far conceded.

The seat has been held by Republican Michael Ranzenhofer since 2008, but he said last year he would not seek re-election.?

The district is broad, stretching from Erie County to southwest Rochester and including?all of Genesee County as well as Chili and Riga, and voter registration there favors Democrats.

Berger is a faculty member at Empire State College and promised to fight for public education if elected. Rath?said he would focus on keeping taxes down.
